Thanks for this Caliban. I'd assumed the mics were there for a deferred R3 relay, or an LPO label CD release. Maybe that will come later - the sound quality on the streams seems exceptionally good.

Count me among the vulgarians who can choose to appropriate the music (for which I'd make no claims of profundity) for my own simple-minded enjoyment in defiance of whatever dubious intentions may have originally lurked behind it. It makes an entertainingly crash-bang-wallop sort of racket which makes a refreshing change from subtle refinement once in a while.

The stream accurately conveys the terrific form the LPO brass, timps and percussion were on - and also that the chorus were excellent but could have done with being bigger. There's only one valid approach to the piece IMO (which I appreciate, for many, is to bury it forever!) which is to go for it, and in particular make the brash and percussive bits brash and percussive. Pretty much what the LPO did on the night.

I suspect there will be a CD... After the concert, the orchestra came back in to do some patches...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
