    Beethoven Overtures

I know this is a loaded question but, I find that my collection of CD's is lacking a recording of the Beethoven Overtures. I was thinking of buying a set containing all the overtures. Years ago I had von Karajan and Berlin Philharmonic on LP but was wondering if anyone had a good recommendation for CD?

Zinman on a cheapie Arte Nova. HIP-influenced, energetic, clean, bracing. Perfect for my tastes, but no doubt quite a contrast to the Karajan!

Thanks, I was looking at that recording on Amazon which gets 5 stars. The Karajan only gets 3 stars as it says it is dated.

They just seem to be fillers for the symphonies don't they? At least that's the way I've acquired them though there are still one or two gaps such as no King Stephen or Consecration of the House.

I think Harnoncourt did a set at one time but he is a taste I've never really acquired.

            Alison,

Thanks, a good mix. I am fond of the Consecration of the House so I may need to look for it as a coupling. But the Harding disc looks good.

Its definitely one of Daniel H's best records. He gives it everything and the
              playing is spot on.

When you say "all the overtures", does that include all the Leonoras?

I'd add my support to Harding and add to the negative view of Harnoncourt in this repertory. I bought the H and it's got plenty of interpretive points - some quite dramatic but to my ears it misses the organic thrust of the music, if I may be excused the expression - it's late and I can't do better.

There used to be a HIP recording of all the overtures from the Hanover Band on Nimbus, but I'm not sure if it is still available.

You can't do better than Masur and the Gewandhaus on Philips Duo for a no-nonsense basic recommendation.

                        I would agree.

If you were thinking of the Hanover Band disc, that is still available but it does not have all the overtures, Leonore 1 and 3 are absent. For me, the best HIPP recording of Consecration of the House is that by Anima Eterna/Immerseel. However, as far as I know that is only available in the boxed set of symphonies, though they make a very fine 'fill-up' indeed.

Hello Bryn, yes, that's the disc I was thinking of, though I never got hold of it - so didn't know that the two Leonoras are absent. What a strange decision - there should have been room on the CD for them, surely? I'm similarly enthusiastic over the Immerseel set, and love the Turkish March which they also throw in.
