Unfortunately though the reviewer compares it only with Staier's fortepiano version and not the multi award winning Andsnes of a few years back - very irritating.

... clearly the answer is to acquire the Andsnes, the Staier, and the Hamelin!

PS don't forget the Schornsheim and the Koopman...

I concur as far as the Schiff and Hamelin ones!

I've just spent a very pleasure able hour listening to Slatkin's 94, 104 and 98 with the Philharmonia. Gorgeous playing and nice flowing tempi...

The LHQ's Op. 9 and 17 sets are also very special.
              Bryn,

Have just succumbed to a tempting email from Amazon offering the LHQ Haydn op. 20 for £ 13.75.

Have also listened to & read many praiseworthy reviews. What I have heard can sound a bit ' scrawny ' ( ? ) at times but one can adjust to this. As with the Bach 'cello suites, stop thinking of some being ' better ' than others, they are quite simply different & one should be prepared to accept & welcome a whole family of ' differences.'

Thanks for your previous comments on behalf of LHQ.

Many thanks, Bryn. I too succumbed. The London Haydn Quartet CDs are a joy. No Haydn lover should be without...

Recently acquired, thanks to Thropps. It may be my favourite OAE recording - of three favourite Haydn symphonies.

Well enjoy them at home - not one single work by Haydn at the Proms this year.

It's Gramophone's CD of the month and the reviewer (David Threasher iirc) did indeed base his review on comparison with the Andsnes - with the inevitable conclusion: get both! I have the Andsnes and find it exciting and irritating in equal measure, so am in the market for a different approach - as a long-time admirer of Hamelin I may need to add this one to the birthday wish list.

Yes, I noticed that - Haydn has been quite poorly served by recent Proms seasons I think. I went to the VPO, Haitink prom which featured the London symphony last year, but I'm not sure there was anything else. Very disappointing.

The Eybler Quartet's Haydn op.33 disc is wonderful. Not that I expect many Haydnists are in the market for a new HIP op.33, having ordered the London Haydn Quartet's new release, but it really is exquisitely played and the recording has superb detail and balance. I believe the Eyblers are made up of members of Tafelmusik.
