    Vallee d'Obermann - Aimard (DG)

Just enjoyed a wonderfully played (and recorded) Vallee d'Obermann by Pierre-Laurent Aimard on a DG album called The Liszt Project, which also includes music by Scriabin, Berg and others.

I wasn't too keen on his earlier CDs of Ravel and Schumann but he seems to have been revitalised by his move to DG.

A friend of mine used to say this is the only classical work with a dog breed in the title...

Richard Strauss was reportedly planning a Symphonic Poem dedicated to his beagle as a companion work to his Domestic Symphony, but after the latter piece was labeled a dog by the critics he was advised that issuing said new work would be redundant.

Hmmmm don't think that's true (though amusing)...

What about Massenet's 1882 Suite "Alsatian Scenes" ("Scènes Alsaciennes")?

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Good to see Aimard taking on the pinnacles of the pianistic repertoire.

Maybe but may I draw the attention of the OP's friend to track 9 on this "Great British Light Orchestras" album....

The Liszt piece is a truly staggering work.

If only Vallee d'Obermann were to be orchestrated by Matthias Pintscher.
