I must have attended RAH concerts when RVW's 6th was played, but two works made a great impression when I first heard them in the very new RFH in 1951 - this symphony and Britten's Spring Symphony.
The clarity of the sound was amazing, although the musicians didn'tlike it.Last edited by salymap; 17-03-13, 11:24.

Nice guy. I met him once. One of his works was a test piece in a wind band competition where I was conducting (25 years ago - I was a student). He was kinder and more helpful than he needed to be when giving feedback.
Mrs B also met him. She was playing the aforementioned Captain Noah at the RAH. H turned up unexpectedly and was extremely nice despite the fact that she and a colleague were playing a lashed-up unauthorised version for 2 pianos (due to the venue size and a huge choir).

It's nice to have an impression confirmed, but see my message 26. The great Boult performances for me are his Decca mono and the later EMI which some critics didn't like, but hey ho !

Ferret, itmust be muffled if we both think so My favourite, as I said earlier, is BLP 1001, the10inch LP with Boult and the LSO.
I'm sure it's been transferred to a CD but so often they seem to lose something IMHO.
I've just bought a Beecham box but lots of the music, especially his Schubert Sym 5, sound better on my old LPs to me.

The Bridge, by contrast is a must.

Well I don't know about you, dear reader, but I was mightily perplexed by all these references to 'the Bridge'.
Turns out it's a performance of Frank Bridge's wonderful orchestral work The Sea by the National Orchestra of Wales conducted by Martyn Brabbins.
I wonder if anyone has listened to it yet
