I've got two recordings, both Concertgebouw orchestra:
Jochum/Merriman/Haefliger (my favourite, 1963)
Haitink/Baker/King (1975, nearly matching the Jochum)
The Haitink/Baker recording was the only version that I had for quite some time. I didn't know that Jochum had recorded it or indeed any Mahler. I've been exploring Jochum lately and I will have to search this out.
Didn't realize Karajan had recorded it either! The piggy bank is groaning...
the Karajan and Jochum are both out of the catalogue. The Karajan is available from the tax dodgers for about $7, but the Jochum is going for obscene prices, although i did find an lp for $11. i hate buying lps on the internet, though, been burned to many times in the past.
Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde. Deutsche Grammophon: E4190582. Buy download online. Christa Ludwig (mezzo), René Kollo (tenor) Berliner Philharmoniker, Herbert von Karajan
I loved Janet Baker's voice, but I could never quite make out what she was singing.
For exemplary diction and a lieder specialist's word-pointing Peter Schreier is certainly worth hearing. I think I once had his interpretation under Kurt Sanderling with Birgit Finnilä on an Eterna LP, acquired ages ago in East Germany and since long gone. I see it's available again as CD and download (and even on vinyl.) I've listened to bits online and there's incredible intensity there. I might be tempted to download it.

Yes, that's the recording I've got, on CD - hence my #13 of yesterday.
And he was a good lad too, BBM. In later years he'd launch himself onto the stage at London's Royal Festival Hall with the walking grace of Groucho Marx
His concerts with the Philharmonia were always an event
Does anyone know anything about the Cortese arrangement for small orchestra, which the Scottish Chamber Orchestra are performing this weekend? How does it differ from the Schoenberg arrangement, which I've found surprisingly convincing both times I've heard it?
