I just didn't see the need for a second, albeit more specific, bargains thread. Clearly other MBers feel differently.

Perhaps I'll start a bargains thread purely for 2CD sets by composers whose names begin with Z and costing less than 10p!

              A few 1p bargains that come IGI-recommended:

Naxos' Rodrigo series is very decent and this disc couples the Concierto de Aranjuez with the Fantasia para un gentilhombre and the lesser known, but rather wonderful, Concerto Andaluz for four guitars: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rodrigo-Comp...1569897&sr=1-6

Bax's First Symphony and the delightful tone poem The Garden of Fand: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bax-Symphony...570027&sr=1-12

Mravinsky's recording of Tchaikovsky's Fifth should be in every music collection: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Symphony-No-...570090&sr=1-14

Anyone wanting a disc of Stokowski's orchestration of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition could hardly do worse than this splendid Bournemouth SO disc: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Stokowski-Sy...570227&sr=1-62

              Beethoven's 5th and 6th - a favourite disc from Norrington's LCP cycle: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Beethoven-Sy...70379&sr=1-125

              There, that's 5p well spent...

                    for about £2.00 recently.

#26 teamsaint, a good cheap version of Gould playing the Goldbergs? I hadnt realised how complicated this is, but I've got four versions on the shelf:

                      1. Glenn Gould Salzburg Recital 25 Aug 1959, with works by Mozart, Sweelinck and Schoenberg. Sony SMK 53 474
                      2. Glenn Gould in concert 1951 - 1960. Previously unissued Goldbergs from Vancouver Festival 7/23/1958. 6 Discs for the price of 4. WHRA 6038
                      3. Bach, the Goldberg Variations, Glenn Gould, piano. 1955 and 1957 at Columbia Studio, New York (previously released material) Sony Classics Masterworks 517419 2
                      4. Bach, the Goldberg Variations, Glenn Gould, piano. Publ. 1956 by CBS Inc. CBS Maestro MYK 44868 (I think this the same as 3, but a different release)

I'd go for any of them if you can find them secondhand, but 2 looks like good value if you dont mind live recordings. 3. is described as the "1955 recording", which is very famous, but there are additional tracks featuring a couple of fugues and some studio outakes. 1. is an interesting mixture and got rave critical reviews. I must have picked up 4. secondhand, its got a £3.95 sticker on the front.

Thanks Sloppers, there is a big variety of editions and recordings.
I'll have a look at your suggestions. Fabulous stuff.
edit. This pairing of 1955 and 1981 looks good.

Why not slide over to the Naxos site or Spotify & have a listen first, teams?

too confusing for a part timer like me Ams, though good advice.

A youtube video of the 1981 recording (I think) was good enough.
I have seldom been so affected my music on first hearing.

Ok, maybe I will road test one or two.

Wilko Johnson live tonight though, so its on hold till tomorrow !

                              1. Isn't well known but it was my first Goldbergs - very impressive indeed.
