Despite some of the vagaries of the production I much enjoyed this opera which was new to me . Which recording do for unites recommend ?Solti, Levineor Bychkov or who else ???

Bychkov's recording benefits from a youthful Dmitri Hvorostovsky in resplendent form, ideally haughty, but what an incredible legato line in his initial rejection of Tatyana.

On Melodiya, Boris Khaikin's account is a classic of the Soviet era - a fine cast led by Galina Vishnevskaya's Tatyana. Sergey Lemeshev is a perfect Lensky, Ivan Petrov is Gremin. The only real disappointment, sadly, is Yevgeny Belov's Onegin, a bit of a dull dog.

I've never seen or heard the complete opera butthe 'Letter Scene', Polonaise and Waltz are some ofthe best of Tchaikovsky and a good place to start if new to the entire work.

I like the Levine set on DG, but then I am known to be perverse in such matters!

I have ordered the Bychkov - as it was much the cheapest of the three recommended in these austere times !

I have the recording that's featured on DG's 50 Years of the Salzburg Festival box set and that is with Daniel Barenboim.

I am thoroughly impressed by this Bychkov Eugene Onegin so far - Focile is very fine as Tatyana and I can get IGI's point about the more yielding conducting on record from Bychkov here especially with regard to the strings than Ticciati.

Yes, i think so. Thgat whole box set has some very good recordings of other opera on it to. Not sure if its available still?
