Bychkov's recording benefits from a youthful Dmitri Hvorostovsky in resplendent form, ideally haughty, but what an incredible legato line in his initial rejection of Tatyana.
On Melodiya, Boris Khaikin's account is a classic of the Soviet era - a fine cast led by Galina Vishnevskaya's Tatyana. Sergey Lemeshev is a perfect Lensky, Ivan Petrov is Gremin. The only real disappointment, sadly, is Yevgeny Belov's Onegin, a bit of a dull dog.Our chief weapon is surprise...surprise and fear...fear and surprise.... Our two weapons are fear and surprise...and ruthless efficiency....
