The Dresden /Davis hectors me and is like being shouted at !
You both have a point. Maybe there's still a degree of insecurity in our expectations that makes us applaud a foreign orchestra (and the Dresdeners are very good indeed) or conductor who tackle Elgar. There was something similar when Solti's recording of this work appeared in the very early 70s (another BAL choice, I recall).

There is very good Colin Davis live recording from the RAH in '85, with the BBC Symphony Orchestra on RCA 'Navigator' series. As with much of Elgar's work, the depths and layers gradually appear on repeated listenings...

Also includes Introduction and Allegro with Munch conducting the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1957

This disc is a winner, I agree visualnickmos. I think the concert from which symphony no 1 was taken was a fundraiser for Oxfam and it is a cracking performance. Add to that a very individual and special performance by Munch/BSO of the Introduction & Allegro that I first heard played by Rob Cowan on R3, and I reckon it's a winner.

My wife had a cassette of that (now transferred to Apple Lossless) and it's a lovely performance.

I have that on cassette too - bought it when it first came out and it was indeed my very first version of the symphony . I recall I liked it a great deal more than this one but then along came Barbirolli !

Damn, another £2.84 spent on albums.
