Elgar Symphony No.1: A Quandary

With an eye to the future, I recently attended a performance of Elgar symphony no 1 at the Royal Academy of Music conducted by Edward Gardner, the first time I've heard him in this work and he certainly brought a lot to it. He obtained some beautifully quiet string playing as well as some glorious woodwind and brass playing.For me it was also his pacing and his handling of transitions that made the performance so remarkable. For me at least, one to watch

I agree, one to watch/listen. I saw him on the BBC doc. Elgar, the man behind the mask; he contributed much useful analysis and some excellent extracts from the Apostles. A very good doc, by the way; in the series Elgar, RVW & Delius. Well done Beeb! (BBC Four).

That will be most enjoyable 90 minutes and with many new discoveries about EE's music & life. But I must go out walking whilst we have the low winter sun.

Maybe not, but the 1957 Pye version has to be at the top of the tree. Simply phenominal.

On Dutton now I think must pull it off the shelf for a listen . The live 1958 Halle Centenary Concert version on the BS record is very intense too.

EA it is a marvellous performance but a constricted and ropey recording for all Mr Dutton's efforts . Such a shame as one gets the feeling that had a first rate recording been made it would have swept the board.

You're right about the recording, but it was my very first Elgar 1 so I have an affection for it. The more I look around, the more I'm pretty convinced that it's impossible to give a truly poor performance of this work.

Quite right Pabs, I have most of the versions and they're all listenable. But as ever, the best is enemy to the good.

I have now watched this documentary. Very rewardi9ng it is too., probably a repeat and may have watched it before but hugely rewarding as Thropps says!
