This is amost certain to be either be one of two 1972 performances: at Cheltenham in July or at the Proms in August. I have both and prefer the former.

Another RVW 6 from Boult. I look forward toit but my favourite is my 10inch LP of Boult with the LSO, made after the set with the LPO when RVW revised the scherzo. BLP 1001, with a beautiful sleeve, 2 lots of Royal Coats of Arms,etc,all red and gold. Performance leaps off the CD too.

I do hope it's the former then! I was at the latter and have it on CD. Was very disappointed in the hall because of a barely even piano, more like mezzoforte, finale The CD transfer I have (Carlton Classics) isn't as bad as I remember - but has someone dropped the level??

The whole concert was a sad disappontment to an 18-yr-old LMP. Elgar violin conc with Menuhin and RVW 6 - it should have been amazing. But M's tuning was painful even to my fairly tolerant (insensitive!) ears, and then a very prosaic end to the symphony

I was at the 1972 Prom - like LeMartinPecheur - and would very much agree with LMP's recollections.

Some of his intonation was So poor I had to switch them off. A very sad experience. I blame his mother who would not allow his early teachers to criticise the youngster. A real disservice to him and us.

The suggestion was it all came so naturally to him when young that when it all began to desert him in the 1960s that he did not have the technical training to correct things .

Notwithstanding there are still a number of great later performances- the Brahms with Kempe, the second Elgar with Boult, the Mendelssohn/Bruch classics from 1959 , the Silvestri Beethoven Concerto the Menuhin/Kempff sonatas for a start .
