    Mahler's 9 - your selection

I know that both DG and EMI released complete sets to coincide with his centenary but DG also released a People's Choice with some rather odd choices .

If you had editorial control and could decide on a complete Mahler symphonies set from any recordings made by any label - what would your ideal be ?

    1 Kubelik DG
    2 Jurowski LPO Live
    3 Rattle EMI
    4 Maazel Sony
    5 Bernstein DG
    6 Barbirolli Testament NPO
    7 Bernstein DG
    8 Solti Decca
    9 Barbirolli EMI

    As demanded

    DLVDE- Ferrier/Patzak/Walter
    10 Rattle/BPO
Would be my choices if forced to have only one of each - and yours ????

PS Sorry to Bruno W - he is my runner up choice in 1,2,5 & 9

      1 Kubelik, DG
      2 Tennstedt Live
      3 Horenstein
      4 Szell
      5 Bernstein DG
      6 Karajan DG
      7 Boulez
      8 Solti
Das Lied von der Erde Ferrier/Patzak/VPO/Walter
      9 Klemperer
      10 Rattle BSO (that's "S", not "P"!)

... that's no conductor appearing twice, and most of the Mahler specialists featured (Mengelberg, Haitink and Chailly the biggest omissions, perhaps).

But my real "ideal" would be the set of the entire thirteen symphonies that the composer conducted in Holland as part of his 75th birthday celebrations in 1935 - with recordings from the Festival of his three Piano Sonatas and the Six String Quartets (including the world premiere of the Sixth, which consolidated his use of the dodecophonic method he'd picked up from his friend Schoenberg that he'd previously used in his 2nd and 3rd Sonatas). There's a universe out there where this all happened!

Do you think we should so the same with Haydn symphonies

              1 Horenstein/LSO
              2 Walter/NYP (feel better, Barbs?)
3 Levine/CSO (the toughest call here. I could have easily substituted MTT, Abbado/Lucerne, Horenstein, or Bernstein/NYP).
              4 Szell/Cleveland
              5 Bernstein/NYP
              6 Karajan/Berlin
              7 MTT/SFSO
              8 Solti/VPO
9 Ancerl/Czech PO (another very tough call)
              Das Lied--Haitink/Concertgebouw
              10 Inbal/Frankfurt

Seems a mixed up post. Which composer/conductor? Strauss maybe? No - dates don't match. A puzzle for a rainy day! Or are we perhaps in a parallel universe?

Why couldn't he live to at least 100? Even 200!

                              Nice one
