      If you are allergic to Norrington but still interested in the HIP approach, there is a two disc set of Wagner overtures and preludes recorded on period instruments by the New Queen's Hall Orchestra conducted by Barry Wordsworth. A few second hand copies still available at a cheap price here :

        I probably lack your high standard of musical taste, DublinJimbo . I think the Norrington is a terrific CD.

        I had a perhaps unlikely ally in John Steane, who was impressed by the lp. http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/...lbum_id=167369

          My favourite Wagner disc by a considerable margin, you will not be surprised to read, JS. These days it comes packaged with Bruckner's 'Wagner' Symphony (as an mp3 download).
