As the OP, (from 5 years ago!) I can report I bought the VPO/Kempe and very fine it is too. In the meantime, I've also managed to acquire Kubelik's DG recording but haven't got round to playing it yet. There is, in addition, a live 1967 Bayreuth performance with Kempe on Orfeo, and in stereo, which has garnered high praise so that's another one to now consider.
Wagner's Lohengrin: Kempe or Solti?

I can't really put my finger on why I find the Ring( Act1 of Walker conducted by Bruno Walter excepted) such a bore compared to the rest of Wagner's output ( though Meistersinger I do find very long ) . I love Tristan and Isolde and really enjoy Tannhauser and Lohengrin and love the music of if not the story of Parsifal.
