I daresay that ultimately I'll be steered towards downloads as CDs as physical objects come to an end.

In the meanwhile, I'm thinking of getting something from this maker ....

working on the principle that buying one will a) put my CDs in one place in an order that I understand; and b) the outlay on this storage will mean there's much less money available for buying more CDs

As a matter of interest, Ams, have you got as far as getting a quote? I've been eyeing them myself, too, in a desultory sort of way.

I solved the problem a different way when I retired, 17 years ago, by buying a larger house in Spain. My collection, currently over 14000 CDs, does not intrude upon the normal living space, and I get free sunshine too!

No I haven't JFLL because I don't have anywhere near enough (I imagine) money saved up but I thought I'd given them a call praps in September - they do look good (huge range of finishes) & apparently they deliver them intact, so no IKEA-style wrestling with instructions & Allen key

What a splendid solution, reinerfan - just not intensely practical in my circumstances, sadly

CDs have been around for almost 30 years now. So, if my maths is correct, that is an acquisition rate of 38 - 40 CDs per month over that period!

                  I'm just jealous.

I don't have too much trouble storing 2-3000 cds, 1000 cassettes and and several hundred LPs, plus a couple of hundred or so scores in the small spare room of the flat I share with my partner, strategic use of shelving can often mean that you can actually keep more in a room than you think. I never thought I'd get all my stuff in that one room before I moved, but in the end there is plenty of room to spare.

I've been trying multi strand approaches, none of which have worked so far.

                        1. Buy more storage units.

                        2. Rip CDs to hard drive.

                        3. Replace some collections of single CDs by boxed sets.

                        4. Reduce CD buying, and listen to CDs already bought.

                        I have not resorted to

                        5. Selling CDs on eBay

                        6. Giving CDs away, for example to charity shops.

                        7. Putting CDs out in the bins.

I too have reached this stage in Life: moving home means I have to weed out my collection. I can probably cull some CDs, and there are various storage solutions, physical and digital, but what am I to do with my collection of several thousand LPs which have taken me over 50 years to acquire? Madame M. tells me that if I haven't listened to something for ten years (and there are many that have been unplayed for longer than that) I don't need to keep it, but what if I decide one day that I DO need to listen to it? Moreover, do I just get a dealer to take the ones I don't want - and if I don't need them, will he?

                          Then there are the books.......

My solution is to load the CDs onto the computer. I'm nearly halfway through having loaded about 1,000. It's a big task but I've loved going through them and finding all sorts of interesting things again, I've bought fewer new CDs recently!

The solution I've found enables me to select compositions or movements by artist or composer and it's very flexible from the computer but I haven't yet got a good solution for playing them in another room, all the systems that offer that have their own limited access to the tags rather than the database I have built through Musichi.

Eventually I'll put all the CDs into a box in the attic.

                            Mike

I have mentioned before about having this facility on here but haven't - so far - broached the subject with FF. I suppose there's no problem with individual members doing this by PM if they wish to do so but I wonder how it would work if open to all? Are there any legal pitfalls?

Incidentally, I have an increasing number of duplicated CD's that deserve a good home.
