Mahler 2: Something Old, Something New

To all those mentioning Abbado/Lucerno, is this the CD paired with Debussy's La Mer (DG) or the dvd/Blu-Ray?

Not really qualified here since I don't have a "new" one in the sense of recent. For a very long time my only recording was Walter on a CBS double LP which I played a lot but haven't heard for years. Maybe I'll dig it out. The version I got when CDs came along was the classic Klemperer. I felt no urgent need for another recording and my "new" acquisition is Bernstein from 1963, part of his recent Symphony Edition box.

Old One: LSO/Stokowski On The BBC Legends Label from The Proms On 30th July 1963 (Not Technically Brillant by any means I know but in terms of a live event/excitement, tremendous or The Philharmonia/Otto Klemperer on EMI

A poor recording of an uneven open air performance but it has an energy and rawness that cannot be matched by manicured studio recordings.

One wonders how many copies of Mahler's 3rd you possess, given your pseudonym. May I ask what is it about this symphony that made you choose it for your username?

Hi Thropplenoggin, Just adore Mahler's Music generally, and collect his recording's as and when I can, Like so many other people I first heard his music through the film "Death In Venice", I have 12 copies on CD of the 2nd & 4 versions of the 3rd. The reason I chose the name was, I treated my Mom and Dad to a performance of the 3rd at the Royal Festival Hall almost 2 years ago with the Berlin Philharmonic/Simon Rattle. It reduce my Mom to tears. I'm new to the forum and as Mom passed away last August, the idea came from her really. I've seen it performed with the Philharmonia at The RFH and BBC NOW in Cardiff and hope to see it again at The RFH with The San Francisco Symphony Orchestra next season. Hope That Answers Your Question, it's the Symphony along with the Ressurection I'm enthralled by

Is that the one filmed in Westminster Abbey with Sheila Armstrong, Janet Baker, the Edinburgh Festival Chorus and the LSO? I have that, too: superb performance.

Hi Ferneyhoughgeliebte yes it is, I know the old VHS isn't great these days given the advent of (HD 3D Extra Clear Ready For This Ready For That, as Peter Kay said if it gets any clearer we'll be sat next to Yoda) but still treasure some of those old tapes and thanks Thropplenoggin for your message much appreciated and nice to be on the boards

I love Abbado's L:ucerne versiopn, also his version with the BPO(Berlin), but I also rather like Mehta's as well!! Rattle too!!

Wasn't it filmed in Ely Cathedral?

I have the Mahler 2 from the French NRO and it is echt-Bernstein, with all the over emoting you could desire, every last drop is wrung from it and the Urlicht is superb
