Barbirolli's Sixth is fierce enough for me - but if you do struggle with his EMI recording the live Testament performance with the same forces is even more remarkable and as noted on another thread quite a bit quicker .

Sorry Barbs, I knew that you might take offense after I wrote that.

Mahler's3rd
Hi I've ordered the New Mahler 9 with The Los Angeles Philharmonic/Dudamel. I'll let you know when I get the chance to play it. I've got 5 other versions: Bruno Maderna/BBC Symphony Orchestra From 1971 On The BBC Legends Label, Berlin Philharmonic/Rattle, Kurt Sanderling's Recording with the BBC Phil also on the BBC Legends Label from 1982, Esa Pekka Salonen's with the Philharmonia and The Bruno Walter/Vienna Philharmonic, Recording From 1938 on The Dutton Label. In terms of the historical aspect The Bruno Walter is wonderful, and the Simon Rattle/Berlin Phil recording really is stunning. I've seen Dudamel conduct Mahler twice, The 2nd At The Proms with the Simon Bolivar Orchestra & With The Los Angeles Philharmonic at The Barbican doing the 9th, both we're very compelling, edge of the seat stuff, the 2nd @ The Proms in paticular was unforgetable, is he over hyped? who know's? wouldnt mind having a few quid in William Hill That The Berlin Phil are keeping tabs on him

Mahler's3rd
Thanks for your offer of Andre Rieu, Mr Pee, I'll decline Dont know how long Dudamel is contracted to the LA Phil or Simon Bolivar for but thought it a decent shout, given he's the "Up & Coming, New Kid On The Block" as it we're, the other name I would have thrown in "each way" would have been Christian Thielmann. Think Daniel Barenboim would be No1 choice but by the time Simon Rattle goes, he's going to be getting on

Great to see Bruno Maderna getting a mention as a conductor of this symphony.
The BBC recording I presume?

Mahler's3rd
Hi Barbirollians, It's excellent, I've played it through 3 or 4 times now and it is superb. I saw the LAPO/Dudamel do the work at The Barbican a while ago, and that was brilliant. It will be interesting to see how Dudamel tackles the other Mahler Symphonies having also done the 5th with the Simon Bolivar. If I we're taking just one of the new recordings of Mahler 9away with me however I think the Berlin Philharmonic/Simon Rattle would just edge it.
