Agreed on the Harding/VPO recording, Bryn. I thought it was very detailed without being fussy.

I was 'on the rail' for the first performance and the hankies were definitely in evidence during the closing bars of the symphony! About the interpretation, surely we tend to forget that Mahler's sound world was only on the threshold of being adequately explored here in the UK. There were few other yardsticks - whole Mahler Cycles were still some
20 years away, let alone the number of conductors who, today, seem to be constantly striving to find the composer's 'inner meaning'.
