    Argerich Lugano Concertos box

Nigel Simeone raved about this box in IRR and I can see why .

Although Argerich's concerto repertoire has shrunk over recent years - indeed sometimes it seems she only plays the Ravel in G , Prokofiev 1 and 3 the Schumann and the Chopin 1 this box contains some works she has not recorded before and a newish Liszt 1 .

I am only through the first two CDs but what breathtaking performances and as an accompanist Vedernikov in particular strikes me as one to follow .

The first CD opens with a dancing account of Beethoven 1 - which is very different to say her recording with Sinopoli but gives great pleasure . Then comes two works she has not recorded before . The Poulenc Double Concerto with Alexander Gurning . This is an absolute delight , all the witty, brittle bittersweet charm that is so difficult to bring off . Finally, capped by a recording with the Gulda brothers of K242 . This has always struck me as one of Mozart's slighter works . In this performance I was completely transported .

CD 2 contains a performance from 2010 of the Schumann with Vedernikov that is incendiary and tops all her other fine recordings of this work to my ears and performances of the Prokofiev 1 and 3 which supersede her EMI recordings - they simply dazzle .

The wonder of Argerich for me is that she is recorded so often 'live' these days and even if a piece has been recorded several times before, each new outing illuminates some new aspect of her art.

Not a conventional recording career by any means, but one to treasure. How fortunate we are

I still think her 1968 recording with Abbado takes a lot of beating. This Lugano concerto box on Dg really is treasure. I have just listened to a breathtaking Liszt 1 - hair stand on end stuff .

This looks like a very tempting box.

I could check against my EMI Lugano box sets, but I presume I am correct that none of these specific performances have previously been issued, so there is no duplication with the previously issued Lugano sets ?

I think that's the deal, AmpH - some of the works are new to her recorded repertoire, and others are re-recordings. Seems irresistible to me

                    I hope you didn't buy 3 copies HD !

I have obtained an immense amount of pleasure from these discs . The Bartok 3, the last of the concertos in the box , is just the performance of my dreams.

When you have the other boxes from this marvelous festival, doesnt seem a good idea to buy these?

The performances and most of the repertoire are both completely different from what's to be found in the other boxes - so buying this set is a very good idea!

Yes , the only duplication in this box is the Mozart Andante and Variations for four hands 7 minutes on CD3 ! And that is a different performance .

If you have enjoyed the Lugano boxes on EMI you should love this . I played CD3 three times in a row last night .

Just as wonderful as promised by Barbirollians. It's all pretty special, really. Having being interrupted by a 'phone call from a great Bachian while listening to the Bartok 3rd, he recommended the following which I'm sure everyone else but me will have heard already but, boy, it's 2 minutes of pure joy:
