John Eliot Gardiner’s St. Matthew Passion

Andrew mentioned a few minutes ago (9.10 -ish, 11 February) a new recording of John Eliot Gardiner’s St. Matthew Passion. I wonder if this is something to do with it.

Through the Night Monday 13 February
John Shea presents a performance of Bach's St Matthew Passion with the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists conducted by John Eliot Gardiner, recorded at the 2016 KlaraFestival in Belgium.

    12:31 AM
    Bach, Johann Sebastian [1685-1750]
    Matthauspassion BWV 244

Mark Padmore (tenor): Evangelist, Stephan Loges (bass-baritone): Christ, Hannah Morrison (soprano), Esther Brazil (soprano), Clare Wilkinson (contralto), Reginald L. Mobley (alto), Eleanor Minney (contralto), Gareth Treseder (tenor), Alex Ashworth (bass), Jonathan Sells (bass), Nicholas Mogg (bass), Netherlands Youth Choir, Monteverdi Choir, English Baroque Soloists, John Eliot Gardiner (conductor)

I remember being very impressed with her singing when she was involved in the most recent Cardiff competition, and thought, "She'll win this easily!" - kiss of death, of course: she was eliminated in the ?third? round - but I still wanted to hear her voice more than any of the "better" voices that went on to other rounds.

The new CD showed a remarkable accuracy of intonation, judicious use of vibrato, some fragility sustaining the higher register (mic placing, perhaps exaggerating this?) which should correct itself with time (and far, far better for me this than the stentorian monochrome of certain other singers - but, above all, distinct attention to the different "characters" presenting the different Arias.

I'm not usually attracted to recordings consisting of a series of items by the same voice - and I wouldn't've thought that I would be so interested in another Mozart CD so soon after getting the Big 225 Box - but I shall certainly be getting this in due course. I might even end up adding the previously added only to Janowitz !
I heard this cd at a friend's house earlier this week and loved it. It's now on my Amazon wish list.

                4 March

Packed with good things. I wasn’t interested in some of the slots but have finished up listening to them all. I think Alexandra Coghlan is particularly impressive on women composers.

Only came in half way through, rest recorded on the bedside DAB for future listening.

Yes, I liked Alexandra C - she was especially deft about the uniquely irritating "Electric Theatre" recording (I resorted to the mute button) - quite complimentary about the technical performance but said words to the effect of 'I can't think of any circumstances in which I would want to listen to this CD'... Quite!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                  Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Or as the reviewer in The Gramophone put it:

“Electric Voice Theatre’s wonderfully manicured sound, ultra-clear enunciation of the texts…and marvellously dramatic delivery of texts and music are wholly winning…the myriad styles and resonances in the music are delivered with aplomb…required listening for oh, so many reasons!”

That must be what was on when I came in from a bracing morning's birdwatching, around 11.30? Mrs T dozing and lacking the willpower to get up and turn it off. I wondered what the circumstances were that caused the CD to be made in the first place.

Can one really be described as "wanting" to do something, if the only reason is to be paid to do so?

                              yup, reckon so.
I want to keep working for my employer.

I certainly wouldn't want to do the work if they didn't pay me.

" Ferney, I need somebody to listen to and review this Meatloaf Greatest Hits album. 500 words, £200.Do you want to?.......... "

                              Thats what I think, anyway.

No - I don't particularly want either to listen to nor review that album, but I would like the £200, so I shall do so. I can't think of any reason why I would want to listen to it, but I'm quite prepared to do that particular something that I don't want to do for £200.

George Lloyd Symphony cycle? Well, I would do manythings for £200, but I won't do that!
