good in depth discussion of the new John Williams box set. today, I thought.

Anybody else tempted by it, in spite of the criticism of some of the discs?

the Gowers Chamber Concerto sounds like a work to hear in full

I've never enjoyed any of his music, but to be fair, I've never given any of it a serious listen. I hadn't realised he'd written enough for a box set!

I deleted my post, but glad you enjoyed it.

So are you saying that the Lasalle SVS set, for example, isn't much of a box set?
            Quality over quantity , surely?

They've managed to get FOUR CDs from this:

Perhaps I've missed the irony somewhere in the posts above, but I got the impression that there were far more than 4 CDs in the boxed set:

10.40am – Tom McKinney on John Williams

Tom McKinney reviews a 58-CD and 1 DVD box set covering four decades of recordings by doyen of guitarists John Williams, released to mark his 75th birthday.

                      John Williams: The Guitarist
                      John Williams (guitar)
SONY 88843092942 (58 CDs + DVD Video Budget)

The irony perhaps is that the (rather excellent, I thought) reviewer was none other than the bête noire of the Breakfast board, Tom McKinney!

OG, I may have got my John Williamses tangled. I'm thinking of the American (I think?) film composer. He has a four CD box set that I probably won't go near.

welsh rugby is a bit like that.

                            only without the box sets.

                              Wise choice, BO!
"...the isle is full of noises,

Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Yes and no. Interesting about why the 'Williams sound' is so distinctive, for instance.

But I thought he seemed pretty naive. He said words to the effect that people tend to think Yo-Yo Ma or the Three Tenors or Nigel Kennedy created 'cross-over' - that it was some sort of big revelation that John Williams was doing it "ages ago" ...

He also seemed amazed that Williams and Bream could just use their first names for an album cover, such was their fame, and that "it's certainly not the case nowadays" that guitarists could just use their first names... Milos, anyone?
