If anyone is looking for a Beethoven piano concertos set that is terrifically stimulating I see that Amazon have the wonderful Friedrich Gulda/Horst Stein set new for just £10.26 .

I had it on vinyl as my first purchase and got it on CD re-issue - pleased to find after all these years it is well regarded. (I found it on a Brilliant Big Beethoven box but care was needed - there are different contents in different boxes from them).

I think it is terrific - now one of my favourite sets and preposterously cheap. In the early concertos his influence on Argerich is quite striking .

There’s also the12 cd set with complete sonatas for just short of £26! I have the PCs on Belart, there were some great reissues on the label.

Just a word of warning. IIRC, the Universal (Decca/DG/Philips/et al) set of the sonatas is fake surround processed (AMSI). The Brilliant Classis option is, I think, straight stereo. Long a favourite survey since their Philips LP manifestation (which, itself, was not the first, I think).

Heavens above - what an extraordinarily beautiful and moving performance of Kol Nidrei by Du Pre & Barbirolli on Record Review just now .

                I agree.

I was half listening to the programme while doing other things but the Kil Nidrei just stopped me in my tracks.

And the full performance in the programme is available on the iPlayer (and in m4a - AAC - file format, by other means....).

Many thanks. I rather like those Barbirolli Society CDs. I only have two, though! Quality over quantity.

I suspect you will not regret adding this as a third.
