I caught the very end of this, on Rec Rev this morning (driving out of the car park). And thought "that's a pretty good chorus, wonder if that recording holds up on better equipment".

But I won't be finding out I think. The orchestral ending seemed to be at such a breakneck speed, it took the life out of finale as far as I'm concerned... (I'm not fussed about the markings but as Norrington states he is a follower of them I'll check his out on streaming.........

Best make it RN's later recording with 'his' Stuttgarters.

I particularly enjoyed today's review of the Previn/Warner 96 CD boxset. A versatile musician indeed.

Alps, I doubt we’ll ever see the like of him again. He hit the mark in so many areas of music!
I wonder how he would have rated Currentzis?

The surprise, for me, was that Previn recorded Mozart piano concertos with Adrian Boult!!

Listening to them at the moment. (I think there are only two, rather than three as mentioned in the programme)
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Yes the third Mozart disc in the box is vocal music with Kathleen Battle and the RPO!

Yes, coupled with Beethoven’s Op16 for the same combo!

I was surprised to find that the EMI disc with Lupu had Previn in K466 when I bought it. Quite big band but very enjoyable nonetheless.

Bought the Moscow Elgar du Pre/Barbirolli already but it sounded outstanding - sort of halfway between her EMI recording and the filmed Nupen account .

It is stunning - I wondered - is this the performance that led Rostropovich to stop playing the work ?

Re the gigue from the 6th Partita, currently playing, I can't hear this without wanting to listen yet again to Cardew's Mountains for bass clarinet, which draws on the movement's principal theme for its motif.

This week’s record of the week, an orchestral suite of Debussy’s Pelleas et Melisande caught my ear. Having listened to the recording a few times, it’s a skifully constructed version by Jonathan Nott that is both a longer and linear selection of the opera’s material that incorporates orchestration of some vocal lines that are not contained in (say) the beautiful version conducted by Abbado. The playing of the L'orchestre de la Suisse Romande is up with the BPO in this music, and now has to be the principal recommendation for experiencing Debussy’s sublime creation in this non-operatic setting. It contains many fidelities, the way the sustained flute connects scenes 2 and 3, the cor anglais substituting Melisande’s vocal line in the St Daniel and St Michael solo, … . It’s coupled with Schoenberg’s symphonic poem based on the same material, which although played well, makes a rather jarring contrast. Whereas Debussy gives an evanescence and subtlety that matches Maeterlinck’s oblique symbolism, Schoenberg’s take is more German Expressionism. Perhaps the Faure or Sibelius would have been a more complementary coupling. A lovely release worth listening to nevertheless.
