One disc struck me on last Saturday's show the Dowland record on BIS with Dame Emma Kirkby . I am astonished she is 68 and her singing was as lovely as ever if as AmcG said a little rounder and less bell like . One for my Christmas list .

Mozart Requiem in HIPP: 28 October

      1045
This summer, conductor René Jacobs recorded the Mozart Requiem for the first time. The project, with the period-instrument Freiburg Baroque Orchestra and RIAS Chamber Choir, was overseen by legendary producer Martin Sauer at Berlin's Teldex studios. From the many available versions of the Requiem, Jacobs chose to record 'Süssmayr Remade', a reworking of Süssmayr's completion by a young French composer, Pierre-Henri Dutron. Elin Manahan Thomas reports from the sessions and talks to Jacobs, Dutron, Sauer and performers about their approach to recording a new version of such a well known work.

For anyone who might wish to download it - a discount price for a limited duration - it's today's e-classical "deal":

World premiere. 1791: a busy year for Mozart who, when he received a commission for a Requiem, was already working on Die Zauberflöte and had a deadline to deliver La clemenza

A good number of today's new recordings on Rec Review can be accessed on Naxos Music Library (as can the Building a Library choice). The Jacobs Mozart Requiem (I'll take some persuading to buy an alternative to the Mozart/ Sussmayer I've known for 45years, and can probably sing (Bass) from memory). Also- Currentzis Tchai 6th, Marianne Crebassa Vocal Recital. The Petrenko RLPO Rite of Spring should appear there soon, as well. ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b09bwvcw ).

I thought that that was a fascinating "article", well-conducted by the interviewer (Elin Manahan Thomas), and with really involving comments from the performers and engineers. I'd be very interested to hear (and "use") the new edition again --- but not in this particular performance! The gloopy rallentando before the interrupted cadence in the Agnus Dei; the caesura in the Domine Jesu (just before "ne absorbeat") sounding for all the world like a botched tape edit; the general "sweetness" of the sound and tempi ... I wouldn't want to listen to this more than once, nor in one "go".

I was interested to hear a sample of this following Forumistas' comments on the "Wot U Listening 2" Thread recently. I loathed it! Given a performance such as those by Mravinsky, Karajan, Toscanini, Furtwangler, the work can be genuinely Tragic, and a powerful experience. Currentzis merely brought out all the latent bad aspects of the work - making it sound like a toddler's tantrum after kicking out his toys from the pram. If the intention was to support the old idea that the composer was a self-pitying neurotic, then it succeeded beyond its wildest imaginings for me.

Not that much of a deal for a 45 minute download.

I didn't catch on yesterday's eclassical Daily Deal although I often check it - occasionally the introductory comments are...refreshingly honest.... (or otherwise interesting).

What there is for that recording is their not uncommon "introductory offer", for a while, of a Hi-Res download for the price of a "CD quality" download. So that might set the Hi-Res guys hearts a flutter. (Meanwhile, I will check out the recording at low res (but suspiciously high quality - to my non-golden ears) bit rate for free via my library membership on Naxos Music Library. I keep meaning to take the NML free 15 minute trial of a subscription for their higher bit rate compared to the Library access rate compared to a FLAC (good enough for me) download and see if I can hear a worthwhile difference.

As it is, I listen on Naxos Music Library, might buy a CD for the booklet if it is not there, or because I really treasure the work. But I leave a lot of the recordings in my playlists on the site. Really invaluable (hence my enthusiasm for NML - which I do try to restrain, but as I'm mentioning it - http://www.for3.org/forums/showthrea...-library/page3 . I promise not to mention NML for a while now....).

I recently got hold of a second hand copy of the Sussmayr/Robbins Landon version - Roy Goodman directing the Hanover Band, with the suprise of a mature Gundola Janowitz taking part. It's pretty good.

I've just listened to this - I record Record Review, rather than relying on iPlayer, which can be temperamental and annoying.

But what a stunning new version of Mozart's Requiem. It's one I must have. Of all completions, this one feels just right, and truly Mozartian. My only quibble was the 4 bar introduction to the final movement. It didn't seem necessary.

I thought it was rather bland judging by the extracts they played. I have been spoiled by the Philips Gardiner I think for other performances although I have a soft spot for the old Fruhbeck de Burgos recording .

Re. the Alkan Edition, I was a bit taken aback that neither reviewer had heard of Mark Viner. First heard this fine pianist several years ago at the Schott music recital room in one of the concert series organised by Jonathan Powell. Mark played some Alkan among other composers. Greatly impressed by his playing at the time, as I think I mentioned hereabouts.

That last rather slow Alkan piece, I'll probably be able to play! The only one, I think!
