This is Brendel's first recording of the Schönberg concerto.
THE Brendel recording is on DGG with Bavarian RSO/Kubelik (coupled with Zvi Zeitlin in the violin concerto op.36)

Sounds an excellent idea, ts. Care to start a thread on Our Summer BAL? Last of the summer, possibly.

There are two Brendel/Südwestfunk/Gielen recordings: 1957 (!) on Vox and 1998/9 on Philips. In my very unhumble opinion - and pace Roehre , the latter of the two is rather better than Brendel and Kubelik (and is certainly better recorded).

The latter recording escaped my attention for some reason- hence no opinion about it (yet )

Interesting parallel, 'Grandad' wasn't one of Schoenberg's selections, on the same programme. Two Little Boys was, but he couldn't have known.

Thanks for mentioning the later Gielen recording. I note it is available on QOBUZ, so will listen to the mp3 offering there.

Only caught part of CD Review this morning, the rest will be listened to. But of the Perlman recordings illustrated, the one that really appealed to me was the Perlman/Chicago/Barenboim Elgar Violin Concerto. Delightful change to hear non-English virtuosity and warmth in the solo part...

Anyone a fan of this performance?

Kreisler, Menuhin, Heifetz, Chung, Zuckerman, Zehetmair, Hahn, Ehnes, Kang, Shaham, and Kennedy (he's from another planet) as well as Perlman ... non-English virtuosity and warmth is quite familiar in this work.

I heard the Perlman when it was first issued on CD - and found it then lacking in "warmth" (and the soloist too far forward in the balance); I much preferred Zuckerman's recording with Barenboim. That said, it's thirty years ago, so maybe it's time to seek it out to see if it will let me have another chance ...

Yes, I certainly am a fan! I bought the LP when it first came out in 1982 and loved it then and love it now. The forward placing of Perlman doesn't bother me at all, indeed, I see it as a positive advantage in that it really brings out Elgar's wonderful writing for the violin in all its glory. This recording meant a great deal to me in those days and it would be one for that desert island.
