Lucky Bryn, with that Demus disc. I've been hoping Deutsche Harmonia Mundi will give us CD transfers of his Schumann recordings on early pianos, but they never seem to appear. I have the old LPs upstairs in a cupboard, but no means of transferring them.

I had been waiting in hope of a CD transfer of the Demus Diabellis since the first days of the medium. Hurrah for Aussie Eloquence!

        BACH: Christmas Oratorio BWV248: 10:20, 7 December

Most enjoyable 20 munities. What an amazing singer Iestyn Davies has become!! A pupil of CPE Bach’s cantata is, as Andrew said, refreshing, and I very much liked Poulanc’s motet.

I can't remember ever getting hot under the collar when listening to CD Review - until this morning.

That dreadful bloated arrangement of Mussorgsky's Pictures orchestrated by someone called Breiner. Even worse was the simpering admiration lavished upon it by Sarah Walker. This really undermines the authority of CD Review (which had until now resisted the rush to Radio 2.5). (Or was this a joke which I didn't get.)

(I need to rush to the bathroom to throw up.)

Ah well, each to his own. Went straight on my list of Naxos discs to order before the current (extended) Eurodisc promotion ends.

[What a quandary! CD or Blu-ray Audio?]

There's Ravel and then there's the rest.

I've felt for some time that McGregor is far too fixated on orchestrations and arrangements of pieces for combinations of instruments not originally intended. Quite why when there is such a wealth of music out there in its original guise which does not get broadcast I can't imagine.

I will have a look. Thanks.

[Ah, listed there at £4.99 for the CD. They don't list the Blu-ray Audio disc at all.]

Ah well, if half-measures is enough for some ...

I wouldn't go as far as that. I really enjoyed the Henry Wood orchestration when I last heard it (though it leaves out many of the sections). The arrangement brings a different colour to the piece - possibly a more dark hued Russian flavour, if my memory serves me right.

And then the more "authentic" Rimski Korssakow or Stokowski or a "modern" Van Keulen.....

Sorry to hear that - they sold me the latest Fred Sherry Schoenberg Naxos for £3.99 last week

... and, best of all the orchestral versions, Mussorgsky's piano original.

                              No argument from me there.

I've just reviewed this for January's IRR. The phrase 'akin to drenching a Fabergé egg in cheap glitter' was used...
Our chief weapon is surprise...surprise and fear...fear and surprise.... Our two weapons are fear and surprise...and ruthless efficiency....
