My Clemens Krauss CDs are labelled Historische Neujahrskonzerte, two discs originally recorded by Decca, but issued by Preiser. There is no date given, and it's not possible to tell from the sound whether the concert was recorded live, or done in the studio later. I would guess that the very good mono sound comes from a tape source. As Krauss died in 1954, I'd place it as one of his later appearances, perhaps others here may know

I have had to amend the track listing, which is faulty, which took a bit of detective work !

I love the playing on these two discs, I bought them in Salzburg where ( amongst other things! ) we went to see the total eclipse in 1999

NYDC enthusiasts may be interested in this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Krauss-New-Y...8690813&sr=1-1 which is a recording of the 1954 NYDC complete with Austrian Radio announcements. The sound is fully acceptable, no more than that.

One of my favourite NYDC recordings.

Available on Amazon I see . This Krauss concert sounds like a good candidate for a Decca Eloquence release.

Listening to that £1.99 Dutton bargain The Barbirolli Viennese Album - what a shame he never got to conduct the VPO in these works for all the tremendous elan in the Halle performances .

I dare anyone to go on YT and compare Barbirolli and Andre Rieu's recordings of the Gold and Silver Waltz the coarseness of the latter's performance is remarkable !

I have two cd recordings on the Opus label, it was recorded New Years Day 1954 and is a live recording. Five musical items were repeated literally played as encores. This air check recording is said to be the oldest recording of a NewYears Day concert. The sound quality is good.

This thread has stimulated me to watch the sizeable amount of complete New Year's Concerts which are available on YouTube - I had never seen the Carlos Kleiber ones before, marvellous!

I remember Kleiber's NYD Concerts and - also inspired by this thread - have purchased the 1992 Concert, which arrived in yesterday's post. An absolute treat from first to last, especially the Thousand and One Nights Waltz.

I mention this in my message 20 above, FM. I think it's a wonderful set and, as you say, the sound is good.
