I saw his dad conduct the Leningrad PO in Leningrad in 1982!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I saw his dad ( Arvid) conduct Tchaikovsky superbly with the Hallé, in Manchester's (now much missed and lamented) Free Trade Hall in about 1965. I was sitting - as a guest / deputy player - in the Hallé's horn section at the time.

          You win!

It was an unforgettable Rachmaninov 2nd Symphony I saw/heard Arvid J conduct...

No one has mentioned the Muti set, recorded with the Philharmonia. It's on Brilliant, and seven CDs for the price of 1. I bought it for the Manfred, which is really good, but solid performances of all the symphonies and well recorded.

... years since I heard these recordings, but I was very keen on them when they first came out.

I only know the Manfred from Muti's cycle and it is a splendid recording/performance

                        - the Fourth in particular is a towering performance.

He also redid 4/5/6 with the Philadelphia.

Has anyone spotted Jurowski's 1 and 6 at less than £9.46 on Amazon - the grocer doesn't seem to stock it despite offering 4/5 at £7.99.
