Sadly this thread is not very relevant to us any more, the days when HMV shops carried a decent selection of 'Classical' music are long gone and their website is a shadow of its former self.

Well, let's see first what the new owner makes of it.

The branch in Princes Street, Edinburgh had a superb classical department which was whittled down to a few cursory racks over a five year period. Even the wonderful view of the Castle didn't compensate for the paucity of the selection.

A similar story at the Leeds branch - the whole of the second floor used to be dedicated to Classical and Jazz, then three rows downstairs, then two; now just a single row of bestsellers.

And not even a castle to compensate

I bought my first ever classical CDs from this Leeds branch. Wasn't there also a small, specialist shop near to the Merrion Centre?

The list of stores to be closed has been announced which seems to consist mainly of stores where one assumes there is a huge business rate; Oxford Street, Bluewater, Meadowhall, Braehead, Trafford, Westfield ( all big malls ) Oxford, Reading etc.

HMV administrators reveal list of 27 stores slated to close.

Big mistake if they go for closing the Oxford St branch.

It would be, but they're not planning on closing it. Fopp Oxford will close, though.

But they haven't. Or have they? Oxford Street isn't on the list, but the headline suggests it will close. I agree that looks like a big mistake.

They include the flagship Oxford Street branch, the location of its first store.
A few escapees include Guildford, Kingston, Dundee, Inverness ......

Never underestimate the effect of an onerous lease or other fixed overheads on these decisions.

It is on the version of the link I'm looking at, between Merry Hill and Peterborough - unless there's a place (rather than a street) called Oxford Street....

But this seems pretty unequivocal from the BBC report ?

"The administrators KPMG announced that the company's flagship Oxford Street store in London is among the 27 outlets set to close.

The HMV stores in Manchester (Trafford Centre), Sheffield (Meadowhall) and Glasgow (Braehead) are also set to shut."
