Harris Symphony No3

Litton conducted the Harris 3rd at the Proms in the 1990's. It wasn't too bad a performance, though he played the slightly cut version which slightly annoyed me. I taped it, so must dig it out if I can find it. Thanks for this Caliban I shall look forward to seeing what he does with the 7th Harris' greatest symphony IMO (an opinion shared by most other Harris scholars & enthusiasts). Will have to be by iplayer though I expect. Is there anyway to record off iplayer, so I can analyse the performance in greater detail?

The Randall Thompson Symphony No 2, on the same Cd as the Bernstein version of Harris 3 is great fun - if a touch cheesy - good tunes though .

The Randall Thompson is good fun, it dates from 1931 and was for many years one of the most popular symphonies in the US. Bernstein remained rather fond of it and Thompson was also one of his teachers.

I found the Diamond rather anonymous in comparison. The Harris is a deeply impressive work and I look forward to hearing the Seventh .

You need to persevere with Diamond, his style is as individual as Harris, but isn't so immediately obvious. Roussel and Ravel were early influences and then Copland. Diamond's command of counterpoint is breathtaking. As well as his symphonies, he also produced one of the great String Quartet cycles in American music.

The three chamber works are among his best. The Piano Quintet and 3rd String Quartet have been recorded in more recent years in the 197o's and a few years ago and the latter is available on CD and as a download. The recording of the Concerto for Piano, Clarinet & String Quartet was I believe the only one ever made! It is one of his earliest works and very good it is too!

The Third impresses me more on each hearing . Am I way off the mark in hearing a sort of power that almost makes me feel it is like an American Sibelius work .

Has the Harris on Afternoon on 3 happened yet? I have been not very attentive for a while and would hate to have missed getting a CD/MP3 for Suffolkcoastal ........
