Glad I hadn't heard that story before playing the damn thing!
Yes well he's an easy-peasy lemon-squeezy "look at my valves, Ma!" hornplayer, isn't he

Now I'll cop it (unless Mrs HS has done extra Yorkshires for lunch)

Hang on I'll pull up a chair and wait for the show to start!

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

And I mustn't take sides but interesting to see how it develops. I'm off for a snoozle

Three actually, with Boston added to the those you mention.

I'd pick Concertgebouw for 1, LSO for 2, Boston for 3 and honours pretty even in 4.

Yes, I'd go along with that. That LSO 2nd is quite superb and is not just easily the best of the LSO cycle but is also one of the finest Brahms 2nd's out there.

Thank you alison and Petrushka. I was thinking along those Proms performances he gave(2011), and i thought that I doubt wether he would record them again. So this provides a good alternative?

Concertgebouw (complete cycle), VPO (ditto), Boston (ditto), LSO (ditto) makes 4 iirc

I can find no trace of a Brahms symphony cycle from Haitink and the VPO, Roehre. I feel sure I would have remembered one as well. Is there a link?

Waldhorn I am sure you are right and it was meticulously prepared but it doesn't hang together to my ears at all . No doubt my problem not Norrington's and his disciples.

Maybe Roehre is thinking of the two piano concertos with Ashkenazy.

I know they made recordings of all four of them (Philips), but I seem only to recall no.3 being released on CD.
Not unusual for Haitink: between the recording of the 2nd Serenade and the actual first release of the recording (concertgebouw, also on Philips) are eleven years.
It depends therefore on who now owns the copyrights for these recordings: VPO, Universal, Pentatone are candidates.

                                Edit:
Other recordings which were made by Haitink/CGO and never released are Ravel L'Enfant et les sortilèges, and Berg's Altenberglieder and 3 orchestral pieces opus 6
