Forgotten I'd got that. Also missed Previn's remake with the RPO which is nowhere near as good as the LSO version.

In my never ending quest to find the one to near-equal the Previn looks like I need to get hold of Slatkin and Mackerras.

Go for it - btw the sound quality is demonstration bracket. The timpani at the end of the 1st movement is unequalled and will blow your speakers if you aint careful!

                    Amazon market place, so technically 99p + £1.26 p&p.

Beef - thanks for the encouragement. The first seller welched on my purchase and I was going to forget about it but your comments on the sound made me go back!

Just listening on Spotify to Sir Adrian Boult's 1956 Nixa recording with LPO - greatly enjoying it

For an essentially slower but nonetheless very dramatic performance within those terms, I was delighted by Horenstein & RPO

I was at the Prom from which it is taken, a very visual event with the spectacular percussionists and the long coloured ribbons used to chime the bells in the gallery.

The Nixa 1956 recordings with Boult are a must on CD. There are 2 volumes with 3 CDs in each, and apart from the Walton there are all the Schumann Symphonies, Britten's Matinees and Soirees Musicales and Young Person's Guide ( mono and stereo versions ) Elgar's Cockaigne Overture and Falstaff , and four Berlioz Overtures, Carnaval Romain, Beatrice et Benedict, King Lear and Les Francs Juges.

All these performances are well worth seeking out if still available, First Hand Masters FHM 06 /07
