On the basis of this thread I have ordered the Slatkin. I saw him often enough in his BBCSO days but was never much of a fan. Be interesting to see how his Walton 1 shapes up.

The Slatkin Walton 1 arrived in the post this morning and has just had a first airing. I don't know how this one could have passed me by as it really is very impressive indeed. I wonder if there was a negative Gramophone review or something which put me off. It isn't quite as exciting as the Previn but it joins Ashkenazy and Bryden Thomson as getting close to it and all three are, of course, in better sound. Perhaps the tension sags very slightly in the middle of the first movement but it's no matter.
Very impressive!
