The flip side was the last movement of the 8th symphony which, as a small boy, quite fascinated me since it was like nothing I'd ever heard before.
I didn't realise it had made the charts PG (see post 446)

      RVW's Sea Symphony.
      Atlanta SO and chorus/Spano/Goerke/Polegato/.

I can't find much reference to this recording on here, and it was the BaL choice in 2007.

its superb so far. ( Taking a meal break after also listening to the Handley)

Polegato is excellent, and the chorus are just brilliant. Superb clarity, and wonderful sound.

Its available on Spotify, so no excuse for not having a listen.

( duplicating this post from " WAYLTN").

edit: Blimey: this CD won 3 Grammys !!

With Record Review talking about the completion of the late Richard Hickox's cycle of RVW's orchestral music, I thought it be a good idea to resurrect this thread and find out about members' views about this cycle. I for one quite like the 9th and Job. I can see why some people might find that the organ of Bergen Cathedral might be over doing it but, I think it's done pretty well, really?

My first exposure to Job was an RLPO performance (sometime 1968--1970; I was in the sixth form) in Liverpool Cathedral; talk about a hefty organ!
I was not the only person to jump out of their skin (or at least a few centimetres off their seat) when the full organ let rip!
(I rather liked the excerpt on today's RR, but wondered about the speed of the Altar Dance: it seemed just a bit rushed. But the score gives dotted crotchet = 76 (it's in 6/8, against 2/4 when the strings start playing their 'tune' a few bars in, at figure DDd: a magical moment!) so perhaps it was right and I need to relisten to the other recordings I've got, including Davis with the BBCSO, to check what they do.)
