My 10 year old, when she was around 18 months, would press her ear up to the speakers when Dvorak 6 was being played.

Well who knows he does like picking notes out on the piano rather than just banging his hands on them .

I have triplets, now 27 years old. At that age, they used to dance in their diapers to Los Lobos "La Bamba" and Michael Jackson's "Bad". Now they have all been discovering Classical Music, each in their own way, and asking me for more suggestions. I enjoy burning discs for them. Took them long enough!

I have completely fallen for VW 9 - I have been listening to Haitink's recording a lot this week it is a delightful, mysterious work like an enchanted garden .

When i get the chance I will try the boy on Dvorak 6 - any particular recording verismissimo ? I have Kertesz or Sejna !

My 18 month old (now 10) listened intently to BBCSO/Belohlavek, Barbie, which was a freebie with BBCMM and very good too.

I fell in love with this symphony many years ago,it's my favourite piece of music of all.
Not sure what it's about or what it means but it brings to my mind mysterious rugged landscapes, deserts, rocks.boulders, outer space, the beginning of the world.......there I go again waffling.
                  Haitink hits the spot.

Barbirolli did conduct it I find from re-reading the Michael Kennedy biography . Great shame he did not record it .

I thought for a moment that you meant the Dvorak #6, Edgie: a "favourite" of mine, too, but "rugged landscapes" etc didn't really fit into my experience of Tony's sunny masterpiece! (Such a good work the Dvorak #6, and practically indestructable - I've not encountered a poor performance of it. Sadly, I've never heard it Live.)

Back to RVW #9 - yep; no waffle in what you say, Edge and another work that doesn't seem to have received a bad recording: Haitink, Handley, Previn, Davis [Proms], and Boult's premiere recording all wonderfully elemental! And that ending ... [raises eyes to heavens to demonstrate admiration beyond words emoticon required here]

Maybe, just maybe, the 9th might have become more widely accepted in its early years of existence, had Barbirolli conducted the 1st performance (as he had for Sinfonia Antartica and no. 8) rather than Sargent. The first recording being made by Boult on Westminster rather than Decca (who had recorded 1-8 of the cycle) might have been a factor too.

Indeed, Sargent wanted RVW to put another tune in the Scherzo of the Sixth and Barbirolli told him to leave it well alone !

I assume it is because the RPS commissioned the symphony and chose Sargent - despite of course JB having the RPS Gold Medal .

The programme for the BBCSSO concert last week had recommended recordings - for the VW 9th they suggested the Bournemouth SO conducted by Kees Bakels on Naxos. Has this been mentioned? (sorry - too lazy to look through nearly 200 posts!)
