For some reason that completely escapes me Goldilocks is the name Col Danby persists in giving to Andrew Davis. An explanation would be appreciated. More appreciated still would be to call him by his proper name.

Thanks, Petrushka, for the elucidation. Can't quite see how Sir AD might be called Goldilocks (did he eat Col Danby's porridge?) but glad that Col (retd.) Danby recognises a fine performance when he hears one

I am firmly of the view that Andrew Davis is the most overrated conductor since Neville Marriner . Both have made more boring recordings in my experience than any other conductor .

What a wonderful thread this continues to be BBM - somewhere way back someone asked for views of the, now wonderfully cheap, Boult EMI set which Santa brought me. Previously, shamefully, I only had a few downloaded versions of RVW symphonies which I hadn't given enough time to. Now I have the luxury of a little break from work, kids and grandkids I am thoroughly enjoying every wonderful minute. For, to be truthful, a beginner I cannot recommend the set highly enough. The disc with 2 and 3 I find myself, ER-like, playing everyday. What, as has been repeatedly said, a body of work.

I was given the very same AG!!I havnt had time to hear it yet though? I still want to purchase the Haitink and previn sets.

I still cannot understand why, I seem to be one of ea few peoplehere, who delishgts at the thought of Sir Andrew Davis and RVWs music. Ithought his Prom performance and subsequent reocrding of Job wasverygood and I have others in my collection to.

                    Barbirollians,

I am inclined to agree with you where recordings are concerned, and his set of the Vaughan Williams symphonies is a case in point. There is a sort of grey dullness about them. Perhaps he's one of those conductors who fail to strike sparks at recording sessions. I have heard him give excellent performances in concerts, again with RVW, his Proms performance of No. 9 is far better than his studio version.

& AD hasn't even gone grey yet - at least his hair hasn't - so he's not in the market for a blond rinse.

I dont think it is right that people should make condesending names to artists that perform our music, in which we love?

It does suggest that their argument might not be all that strong.

That's amazing. Round here the BHF shops have the most highly priced CDs of all the charity shops. Even BBCMM cover discs are £2.99 each.
