They routinely play Hendrix songs at the Swan Centre in Eastleigh. And, as you will appreciate if you know Eastleigh, this significantly improves the whole shopping "experience" !
I have never heard any RVW played there though. Perhaps they have put the Cd back in a vast Wagner box set by mistake,or something equally tiresome.
(losing the CDs being tiresome, not the Wagner, obviously !)
But this is really good: I wouldn't disagree with anyone who regarded this as the best recording of the work - takes its palce with Boult and Handley as far as I'm concerned.
In reply to Ferney, I suppose I don't really consider whether one VW symphony is superior to another. The 6th is a truly amazing work, but there are days when I would prefer one of the others (even A Sea Symphony). The interesting thing is that the composer himself must have been satisfied with his first symphonic attempt, as he never revised it, as he did with his no. 2.
My favourite has to be no. 5.
I am not musically informed or qualified enough to discuss the merits of one RVW symphony over another,I enjoy (need) them all.
However,if I could only save one from the fire it would have to be no 9.
I have been enjoying Alexander Gibson's recording of the Fifth this morning . It comes on a 2 CD set with the BAL winning Berglund 4 and his Sixth as well as Silvestri's magnificent Tallis Fantasia . Not a recording I was aware of before - anyone know it ?

Yes - I found it some while ago on an amazon "trawl" and couldn't resist the mad (low) price. Quite a gem of a 2 CD set, to say the least. Not a weak link in any of it.

The Gibson 5 is an extraordinarily Sibelian account - which is hardly a surprise I suppose considering his eminence in that field and VW's dedication .
