I was there, too! What a shame that the Schoenberg Survivor from Warsaw that began that concert was not included on the same disc. Incidentally, I met Tennstedt backstage after the concert. An unforgettable evening.

one of the very greatest symphonies of the 19th century.
Apologies - I got the dates wrong!

I am deliberately ignoring all this recent nonsense about the 'hanging together' of one of the very greatest symphonies of the 19th century.
        Many thanks for the compliment.

Yes, the very one. A miracle of edge-of-seat excitement.

As someone said of the same combo's Resurrection, Lordy Lou !!

I was certainly on the edge of my seat! I have my ticket inside the CD booklet and see that I was on the Green side in Stalls seat H6.

I retain a vivid memory of Tennstedt in a state of considerable nervous agitation, pacing up and down in his dressing room, the inevitable cigarette between his lips as I asked him to sign my programme. It reminded me of Alma's description of Mahler himself at the premiere of the 6th. How I wish I'd had my camera!

I got his autograph a couple of times, too - maybe that very evening. Once it was outside the artists' entrance at the back of the RFH, but the other time I was with some people and KT and Mrs T in the big lift down to the artists' entrance. I have no idea what I was doing in there. Anyway, on both occasions, as well as the fags, I recall a distinct whiff of schnapps...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I'm amazed that KT had time to get schnapps at the RFH bar, given the low staffing level at that time - a chap could die of thirst
