    Back to Klemperer.

Did anyone hear the extracts from OK's Philharmonia cycle of the Schumann symphonies on CD Review? I have to say that this is strictly one for the Klemperer fanatics IMO. Sounded like back in the day when someone put the record player on half speed. Only the 4th had a sense of inner momentum as Richard Wigmore illustrated. Personally I'm sticking with Sawallisch.

This has been discussed on this thread, SV.

no4 was Philharmonia and recrded much earler than the rest - 1 2 and 3 were later NPO recordings - I suspect that neither conductor nor orchestra were at their best but they are an interesting part of OK's recorded history but not a patch on his Brahms and the best of his Beethoven Symphonies.

          Well, she would, wouldn't she?

The fact that the article you quote appeared in a newspaper noted for its willingness to pass off scandalous rumours about artists as facts does not inspire much confidence

I have just re-read that article, which I now recall from when it first appeared.

It does not convince: in his first paragraph, the writer hypotheses (Schwarzkopf....'would have been of an age'....to be impressed by Nazi paraphernalia, etc) and he continues in this vein, as if he had some special omniscient insight into the way ES thought and felt. In other words, he is a writer of fiction, not a reporter.

ES may not have been a 'nice' person, but so what? Whatever she did or said (or may have done or said), that shouldn't stop people from appreciating her art (even though, as I have said, she does nothing for me). It is, I'd argue, absolutely essential to separate your feelings about an individual from your feelings about their personality/deeds.

Well, maybe not, but it raises a very strong suspicion, doesn't it? And that must make us a little sceptical of claims that she was an 'innocent'. I imagine that the Nazis did not accept as members people who were not of like minds - or who at least said they were.

This thread is about OK boxes not about ES being a Nazi. I suggest going back on topic or starting a new thread maybe with the ES references transferred!

Heaven forbid that a thread might evolve into something else...

A suspicion isn't proof, though, so all the Nazi rumours must be filed under 'speculation'.

                      No ! You don't say

Returning to the Klemperer boxes I am enjoying the Romantic symphonies apart from the sluggish Schumann . The Midsummer's Night Dream in particular is marvellous as are the schubert symphony recordings .

Not keen on his take on New World but this is a great box - I like the Weber overtures in the box.

Love the whole Romantic box, ESPECIALLY the Schumann. I respond to K's 'heavy' take on this repertoire.

Profound disagreement over here, Mandy.... not with your love of it, mind.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
