    Favourite Neeme Jarvi recordings

    Plenty to choose from !

One of my Christmas Presents to myself is the new SACD of the Sleeping Beauty.

No reviews seen yet. I always like getting a new NJ recording and it's splendid that he is back with Chandos.

NJ is notorious for the vast number of recordings he's made but - and this is the truth - I didn't have a single one on my groaning shelves until this summer when I picked up a Samuel Barber CD second hand from Gramex (CHAN 9908 with the Detroit SO).

Likewise, and it's not arrived yet.

      Review:

Among my favourites of his recordings are two volumes of Estonian music on Chandos.

You most probably wouldn't get a Parry disc made in Wales on DG.

Very surprised Pet. Were you never moved to investigate his Prokofiev Symphonies or perhaps one of the DSCH discs ?

Funnily enough I should be honest and confess that I don't regard Jarvi as one of the greats: most of my purchases have been repertoire rather than artist led. That said I love the enthusiasm of his music making, the sheer beefiness of it all, ideally suited to the big glowing sound Chandos invariably provides.

The best NM are when he has little or no competition. The Tubin Symphonies are a great place to start; crackling performrances of really good music by an otherwise neglected composer.
I can't abide his Tchaikovsky. He did do a good Shostakovich 5 with the RNSO (I think) on Chandos.

I've got quite a few that I'd recommend - the aforementioned Prokofiev (not just the symphonies) and Martinu, Berwald symphonies, Sibelius orchestral works, Grieg, Alfven, Tubin and Reger. Some of which are available on Brilliant.

I think, to some extent at any rate, that I was rather put off by the conveyor belt production of NJ's recordings. Also, where Prokofiev and DSCH are concerned the competition is stiff and others have had greater claims on my attention (not to mention my wallet). Ditto Richard Strauss. For these reasons I've never felt moved to investigate. The Barber disc is fine so perhaps I should look at the discs he has made where he has the field pretty much to himself (eg Tubin).

I'd forgotten about the Berwald and Alfven sympnonies, both of which I have, good shout.

Assuming that NM = NJ, one instance of where that's decidedly not the case imho is with Strauss's 'Four Last Songs' (and indeed other orchestral songs on those Chandos albums) with Felicity Lott. As mentioned elsewhere, a private BAL with friends led to his & her version coming top of the pile, the orchestral playing and overall interpretation (as well as the sumptuous and well-balanced recording and of course FL's singing) outstanding and involving.

I'd rate a number of his other Richard Strauss recordings too, perhaps most highly the rarer ones (here we come back to your point Richard) like 'Aus Italien'.

It has to be said that my hifi system tends to sound at its best with Chandos orchestral recordings - there's something about the typical Chandos 'sound stage' that really comes alive on the equipment I have.

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

There is also a wonderful Stenhammar set on BIS which came out in the mid nineties.

Don´t like him as he almost always rushes ahead. He is recording the Atterberg symphonies for Chandos now and that is positive. I think.
