Your favourite modern instrument baroque records

No doubt they have been sent to charity shops or the storage boxes of shame - as now HIPP performances and before that " authentic instruments " records were all the critics told us we should listen to . Don't get me wrong I have learned lots from those recordings and they form the vast bulk of the recordings I have of baroque repertoire but some older performances still seem to me to capture the spirit of the music just as well .

There has been some recent rehabilitation of older baroque recordings judging by the music press but it seems largely for historical interest . I wondered what modern instrument performances are still beloved and played by forum members .

Two to start for me - Menuhin's Water Music recording - lots of bounce and Schneiderhan's thrilling Four Seasons .

I'd second Alpie's Dido and add either of Janet Baker's recordings.
      The Busch's Brandenburgs
      Furtwangler's Handel Concerto Grosso.
Fischer and Gould in Bach's 48
      Ferrier in anything!

Iona Brown's 2nd recording of Handel's Op 6 (now on Brilliant) is fabulous.

(I also have a somewhat odd affection for HvK's anachronistic but beautifully played version of the same pieces.)

But - JEG has never thought of himself as a HIPP conductor.

Hermann Scherchen conducting just about anything by J.S.Bach, but especially the Matthew Passion (!!) and The Art of Fugue...

Has JEG made any public pronouncements about how he feels about his first stab at the Vespers?

Somehow Lipatti's Bach and Scarlatti are so wonderful I didn't feel they needed to be rescued from modern instrument obscurity .
