Glad you've found your way to Khachatryan, Thropplenoggin, and I agree with everything you say.

Actually, Khachatryan can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned – ever since I heard him give a stunning performance of the Shostakovich Violin Concerto 1 at the Proms in 2005. I've heard him play it again at the RFH and also the Berg and Tchaikovsky concertos live. I've also chatted to him and got him to sign my copy of the Bach recording. A most amiable and gifted young man.

I was lucky enough to see Viktoria Mullova in a Bach solo recital at St Georges, Bristol, back in October, she had her 2 x CD Digipak set of solo Bach works for sale which I bought and she was good enough to sign for me along with her Book "From Russia To Love". She is brilliant, and totally gripping to watch. I havent heard the Khachatryan, I'll check it out, thanks, If i were to add to my collection which of the two would you recommend the Sergey Khachatryan's or Isabelle Faust's?

Regular readers will be pleased to know that I have given up adding my customary response to outstanding recommendations, but it has led me to ponder just how many younger generation string players of quality we have before us at the moment.

            Perhaps another thread?

Their approach is so different that I'd try to sample some on YouTube, Spotify or another streaming site before buying.

However, I've been listening to Sergey Khachatryan's newly released recording of the Bach Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin and I must say if anything could convert a doubter this certainly can. The piano is my instrument and I'm no expert when it comes to judging a violin performance. But this is exquisite, marvellous, heady stuff!

There's plenty of Khachatryan to sample on YouTube too, fortunately:

Is that because you think we have a shortage or an abundance a51? I would say the latter.

Like Barbirollians, I particularly enjoy Julia Fischer's solo Bach. Her playing is poised, but with no lack of expression - rather like Arthur Grumiaux only in a more intimate style.

IF you can find it, try Sergiu Luca, recorded about 40 years ago, relased here on Nonesuch.
