Worst BaL ever?

    Worst BaL ever?

    Thanks to Nice Guy Caliban, I had the (dis)pleasure of hearing the most abominable BaL I've ever heard: Hilary Finch's ludicrously cursory stroll through Mahler's Rückert Lieder. No sense of coherence or methodical approach. A confusing mishmash with ill-chosen excerpts that petered out before they'd fulfilled their exempli gratia duties. Thankfully it was all over in 30 minutes. The only good that came of it was to make me appreciate more how good many BaLs are!

    I do wonder, though, whether this was some whittled down Podcast version and whether the original broadcast (Nov 6 2010, it would seem) was longer. However, this has not been the case with other BaL podcasts that Caliban has kindly made available to me.

    Anyway, can anyone think of a worse BaL?

    I don't remember that BAL. I think the only pruning that goes on is in the length of the musical extracts - I don't think they curtail the spoken text. The all come up as short measure compared with the broadcast original. So I don't think that's the explanation, because those other podcasts I sent you will have similarly-abbreviated clips.

    The BBC must have a really lousy deal with the recording industry - the podcasts from France-Musique never have 'clipped clips' - "Le Jardin des Critiques" podcast features the same clips as the radio transmission, sometimes up to 5 or 6 minutes each...

              It's one of those days when I think: work is going to be the easy bit today !!! (I often get that feeling from the AA thread!)
