It was on BBC Legends . I think it is deleted but second-hand copies may well be about. It was recorded at the King's Lynn Festival on 24th July 1970 . It was his penultimate concert - he died five days later in the very early hours of the 29th July .

It is a wonderful performance .

There was a Barbirolli/Halle Tchaikovsky 6 on Golden Giuinea with an absolutely splendid account of the third movt - especially the percussionist's way with the cymbals, very thrilling indeed.
Barbirolli's final EMI recording (as Beecham's) - Ein Heldenleben with the LSO doesn't get mentioned often but is worth seeking out.

I was unaware of this, and always believed Delius's "Appalachia" to be his final recording. I'll investigate.

I said on another thread that Shipway conducts the Alpine Symphony as I imagine Sir John might have done.

The Tchai 4-6 turned up in a double CD pack on HMV Classics - cracking performances even if the Halle is a bit raucous at times.

Ein Heldenleben is a lovingly played performance but was recorded in November 1969 according to my copy coupled with the Mahler 6 on Double Fforte.

I am truly astonished and appalled that the BBC Legends recording of his 1970 Elgar 1 is no longer available. For me this is one of the indispensable Barbirolli performances.

The Bruckner 8 has gone too along with the Viennese Night at the Proms . For some reason the coupling of Beethoven 5 and Shostakovich 5 - which I would not put amongst his best records is , however, still available.

I completely agree in every respect.

                      So what of it?
Doesn't Tchaikovsky need some raucousness when appropriate?
I have those superb recordings. Contrary to your judgement I think that there are places where the brass section UNDERPLAYS.
Not for nothing were the orchestra's Principal brass players at that time dubbed
                      The Whispering Trumpeter
                      and
                      The Whispering Horn Player..!

There is no need to jump down my throat ! The words " cracking performances " in my post appear to have escaped you Waldhorn.

I don't regard the raucousness as a fault - it was just a warning to anyone who liked their Tchaikovsky smooth and Berlin Phil like .

I've just checked - although not ideal, the Bruckner 8 is, at the moment, available as a FLAC download from TheClassicalShop and as an mp3 from Amazon and TheClassicalShop, amongst others. I think I'll get the FLAC download before that too disappears.

No trace of the 1970 Elgar 1 though.

Not a description I recognise in say, Karajan's early 1970s Tchaikovsky Fifth, which borders on hysteria at times!

. I like Karajan's 1970s BPO Tchaikovsky recordings a great deal - hysterical is not a word, however, I would use to describe that Fifth .

Raucous and hysterical are not synonyms in any event.
