    Czech PO/Baudo in 3 & 5 and don't bother with No. 1 at all.

Luisi, I presume that is Fabio Luisi? I did'nt know he recorded them? Compared to Dutoit?

and on this thread, various posts from JLW's at Number 25 onwards. It's fair to say that there seem to be some polarised views on the set (Luisi is a conductor who tends to cause such reactions). Thomas Roth (and others) doesn't much like them, JLW very much likes them and others like myself like them. TR thinks that the recorded sound is uningratiating; I, for one, don't think that it's too bad. I find Dutoit workmanlike but not very inspiring - and certainly find Luisi to be preferable but the latter is clearly not to everyone's taste. While I might not agree, I certainly respect that view.

To get No.5 has to entail duplication because Honegger's symphonies are so short, so get the all-time classic Munch with the Boston SO c/w a searing account of No.2 (better than the very good later Paris one). These are mono from 1952-53, but you really won't mind when you hear them. There is a stunning Japanese BMG transfer, but the RCA Gold is OK. Luisi may cause a row, but these Munch readings wouldn't (surely...?) - they've never been surpassed. The Jap. CD includes a Roussel Bacchus & Ariadne Suite that will really get you out of your chair at the end!!

Look what went on while I was away!
3 variables in our reactions to recordings - the system, the ears; then the preferences, knowledge and experience of that thing between the ears. Simple really isn't it? Not.

Bbm - if you seek back among my posts you'll find a description of the Luisi's idiosyncrasies on the "What are you Listening to now" thread...
          read, mark and inwardly digest...

ah, here it is, long way back on 4/11/12, WAYLTN no. 7431.

A second hand copy of the Munch 2 & 5 has arrived - far too tired to give it a spin tonight but will try and play it tomorrow.

              And ?!?!?!?

Anyhow, any good developments over the last 3 and a half years ?

That Luisi set is a bit pricey ,and I want to try before I buy, but could be in the market for a really top notch #4.
              Only have the Dutoit.
Edit: the third is the only Honegger symphony ever to have been performed at the Proms.Fact.

As well as the Dutoit set, I have this compilation, mentioned in the OP, still available via Amazon resellers or as an expensive download on the Presto site:

Not sure I have listened closely enough to say which I prefer.
I bought this partly for the Cello Concerto, which I like a lot.

                  Interesting suggestion, Pulcers.
Perhaps I should pop round to my Mum's and see if she has a copy.

It worked for the Pritchard "Poppea"...,. :

Don't know the Cello Concerto, shall give it a listen.

For a singledisc, this is the classic Honegger 4

Various couplings around, this Dutilleux 2nd, held by some to be a classic too, is, as Smash Hits used to say....quite good. Still, this one has the gorgeous Parisian mid60s orchestral timbres, and the nicest cover art...

Smash Hits? Blimey. Only bought that when there was a free flexi disc included.

Incidentally, I picked up a free NME the other day. Oh dear.I wish I hadn't.
Anyhow thanks, Jayne. I was contemplating the Apex reissue, at a giveaway price.

My 2016 budget doesn't stretch to fancy cover art, if it is an extra cost.....

I have a horrible feeling I never got round to playing it and it just was filed away ! I better dig it out .

The Luisi set is now at the equivalent of £2.92 +pp on the La Boutique RTF site.

                            Ah! £12.79 p+p …

Finally I have dug out that mono Munch coupling of Honegger 2 and 5 - agree entirely with JLW terrific punchy recordings but far from lacking in subtlety - the Second in particular Is magnificent spine tingling stuff .
