Herreweghe's New Missa Solemnis on PHI

I've just ordered Philippe Herreweghe's earlier Missa Solemnis on Harmonia Mundi. What a gorgeous looking jewel case and insert it comes in (the later William Blake cover re-issue, I mean). Reminds me why I like owning physical objects!

However, the sound is notoriously dodgy on the first couple of tracks, something mentioned in the Gramophone review here. The choir sounds oddly distant whilst the orchestra booms, the timpani excessively present. It does level out, though.

Herreweghe is currently re-recording a lot of repetoire on his new PHI label. I wonder why this is. Updated sonics? More creative freedom or less pressing recording schedule? A new, more mature approach? Whatever the case, the Bach Motets received rave reviews and sound 'smoother' than his first outing.
He's re-recorded the Missa Solemnis, which is due out in France next week and in England in early December.

You can hear a link to the 'Kyrie' below. It sounds a bit foggy to me. Hmm.

    Quelle horreur!

If you ask ff nicely I expect it can be fixed!

    PS: seems it has been.

Shame about the distortion you mention, because I might have bought this! I'm a great admirer of Herreweghe and up to now have not been disappointed by anything he has done. Someone (on here?) said also that he is also an extremely pleasant chap to work with.

Ah, yes. So it is. I was trying to get round the recent change, whereby you can no longer access gramophone.net and all those old reviews. This was a cached copy of the Herreweghe review on Google. Try this:

          - search for "herreweghe missa solemnis gramophone"
          - click on >> to the right of the results
          - you'll then see a link to the 'cached' copy of the review
