[QUOTE=Thropplenoggin;397007]Good question. The answer will have to wait, alas, as the CD is now nestled in one of umpteen moving boxes.[/QUOTE
not got the CDs out and the system churning out upbeat choons yet, @Noggo?
A priority, I would have thought.
Hope all is going well.
I'll give an opinion on Fujimura later, as i am spinning the Nott/ Bamberg right now. Summer certainly marching in, in fine style !!I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.
I am not a number, I am a free man.

Needless to say, I have a lot of recordings of Mahler 3 on my heaving shelves. I've not heard Bamberg/Nott so that must go on the wish list.
One particular problem with the Mahler 3 is the very end which must not be speeded up. Rattle does this in his CBSO account and promptly rules himself out of court as does Solti amongst others spoiling what is an otherwise fine version.
If I was going to take just one Mahler 3 to that desert island it would be Bernard Haitink and the BPO. As you would expect with Haitink, the final climax is wonderfully prepared and is overwhelming, just as it should be. His BPO performance in the Barbican in September 2004 (can it really be that long ago?) remains one of the great concert hall experiences of my life.
There are good reports about a new Sinopoli live performance CD on Amazon and that is also on the wish list. His Philharmonia recording is excellent but the live one is said to be even better http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004DCP0L...I2ADX8MAST6OSY
Has anyone on here heard it?"The sound is the handwriting of the conductor" - Bernard Haitink

Doesn't Mahler 3 go on just a little bit ?,only IMVHO,don't want to start a war or anything.
I used to think this work sprawled out of control, but now I would not want to sacrifice a single bar.
My favorite is James Levine/Chicago SO. MTT, Horesnstein, Bernstein/NYP are all worthy alternatives.

So I thought I might solicit views on some of the best recordings around,so as to investigate better.
It was covered on BaL in 2007, but only by experts (), so lets hear what you (other experts) have to say.
Thanks

(No chance of a crafty move to a better seat in this one...!!)

Barbirolli on BBC Legends with Kirsten Meyer - Ferrier and Boult back in 1947 on Testament. Her singing of O Mensch is completely unmatched sends all manner of shivers down the spine .
Modern versions - I love the Rattle ! Big thumbs down to the studio Tennstedt recording .
Tempted to get the Nott - I really like his recording of the Resurrection symphony. I do not have any Abbado versions . I do have Lenny's NYPO version in that big box but to my shame have not listened to it yet .

I'll throw in Mitropoulos in either his NYPO or WDRSO versions (both with cuts) for wonderful last movements, Abbado's 'live' BPO performance at RFH , and Bychkov again with WDRSO.
Oh and the studio Sinopoli - not heard the 'live' version yet
