The Bavarian RSO under Jansons - soloist Nathalie Stutzmann. Outstanding. Not to be confused with his inferior Concertgebouw recording.

VERY hard to find now, as it was an exclusive "Abbonenten" 2CD set available only to subscribers - thankfully still available through Moskitos (an excellent German seller) on German Amazon. This should whet the appetite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdS06DZJLek

Whatever view we hold about Mahler he always elicits lively debate.

For me the Abbado/Luzern Blu-ray of the 3rd provides the perfect combination of a sonically and visually stunning performance, by a truly great Conductor. I wouldn't go three months without watching it, never mind thirty years!

There aren't too many composers that I have 'problems' with so that I have plenty to listen to.
          Hiya Suffolkcoastal,

I find that certain works such as Mahler 2, 3 & 8 benefit greatly by being heard in live in concert but the orchestra and conductor must be of high quality.

I only have Nott 6 and 7 and enjoyed them both very much. Good sounding recordings too.

I'm already hoplessly intoxicated. How is the M6 arrangement going, bbm?

I have indeed. I very much liked the way the oboe and cor anglais players observed the hinaufziehen instruction. Not simply portamenti, but with real character. A very different approach to the whole work from that of Abbado, Gielen, Rattle or your beloved Bernie, but I found it entirely valid in its own right. Agreed about the audio picture, too.

The No 2 is very clear sighted and superbly played - only drawback a wobbly contralto that Baker and Ferrier and countless others knock into a cocked hat .

Now arrived from Moskitos. Possibly - no, not possibly, it was - the best live Mahler 3 I've heard was conducted by Jansons (others include Abbado and Haitink) and this brought back why I thought so at the time - it's so good that I immediately wanted to listen to it again. I can only assume that contractual reasons involving the RCO version are the reason why it was confined to BRSO subscribers, rather than being released more widely. Deepest thanks to Karafan for pointing out its existence.

Anybody mentioned Abbado/Lucerne Festival Orchestra? The best I've heard.

HD: Have you got a link to Moskitos. A Google search is less than helpful. Thanks
