I have recently acquired the Sinopoli and Ozawa sets for around £20 each - if I only had time to listen to them!
On the US Amazon site a used copy of the MTT/SFSO can be had for $5.99 (hybrid SACD/CD), whereas the used LSO version goes for $10.
I have the SFSO recording and it is wonderful, never heard the LSO version.

Oh and the studio Sinopoli - not heard the 'live' version yet
ams The NYPO Mitropoulos is an interesting version - only one I've ever encountered on 1 CD.

rfg for MTT the cheapest UK Amazon Marketplace LSO is £10 and SFSO is £13.95! I have the LSO which is vg and I think I'll wait forever for a Bargain box SFSO!

I've had Ferrier/BBCSO/Boult from 1947 for a while. Time to give it a whirl.
Was it the first UK performance? Think so.

Lots of wonderful versions already mentioned, to which I'd add Manfred Honeck and the Pittsburgh SO on Exton - I don't think it's been mentioned yet? Anyhow, it's a tremendous performance (in my view) that is also in amazing sound. It's this one:

What about Bernstein with the VPO? I seem to recall it came highly recommended on these boards some little time ago.

I am struggling to find the disc. I note it was released on DVD (in 1973?). It is also here on youtube

Great film - Lennie's a total celeb!!! Thanks for posting (shame Youtube is banned here in Turkey ).

Back on topic, must not forget the best (IMHO) Mahler 3, Giuseppe Sinopoli & the Dresdeners. If you haven't got it, snap up his cycle box-set. It can be had quite cheaply.

The versions I have are the David Zinman, Claudio Abbado and Simon Rattle. My brain cells are in working order, today(I think!) :)

Is there a Dresden 3? I don't remember having seen it. The cheapo box set is with the Philharmonia. But there's a newly released live 3 from Sinopoli and the Stuttgart SWR which receives rave reviews from the usual suspects on Amazon.uk.

Has anyone mentioned Bychkov & WDR, on Avie? I remember it as being rather good: must try to listen again.

Bychkov - fine conductor - its available on Naxox Music Library (searching, advanced search, under the Label and "Mahler"). So yes, I must listen to that........

What is that 12 disc set on Eloquence exactly ? The Philharmonia cycle with a few extras? The Dresden orchestra is named on the front as well

                        Mea culpa

The Sinopoli Mahler cycle is The Philharmonia on DG.

Although the set includes some 'extras' from the Dresdeners, it was his 2nd Viennese box set that got in my head!

Alas! Mahler 3 is no longer a favourite of mine, mainly because I find the last movement (I'm really sorry about this) banal. I "learnt" the symphony with the Bernstein recording and my parents thoughtfully accompanied that birthday gift, when I was about fifteen, with the orchestral score.
I still use it; and recently bought the Nott version which a couple of posters have praised. Continuing the negativity of my post, I find it rather tame. Bernstein seems happier with the vulgarity of the first movement.
By the way, do others think that following a score when listening to a new recording is to be encouraged? I don't usually do so; perhaps doing so with this Mahler 3 didn't help my appreciation of Nott's performance.

We were listening to the last movement two nights ago and my wife wanted to know what the beautiful music was. To each his own.

I love the last movement. It's too short if you ask me!

Oliver, put your CDs away and don't listen to it for 3 or more years. Give your ears time to refresh.
